It is in these times - the raw, opened-flesh, heart-on-the-floor times, that we question the existence of God, question our faith, question life-meaning.
Faith Journey is my story of belief, through paintings. It's a collection of pictures that express my walk through this hard and complex life with a God who has walked a harder path before me, is walking the rough road beside, and is smoothing the way behind.
Each painting has been prepared for display at The Fine Arts and The Christian Faith; a weekend conference at Concordia University in Alberta. I want to share a bit of each story that inspired this collection of abstract pastel paintings.
Bright colours, busy line, sweeping motion - this painting was brought about as I recalled a day as a nine year old girl with dirty feet and tangled hair, when a neighbour friend introduced me to Jesus.
Prior to this introduction, I had simply admired the largeness of the world around me, and yet sensed that there was more than the world alone. I didn't know that I was looking for something spiritual. Does anyone really know when they're searching for meaning? I just recall the wondering, the unanswered questions, the emptiness and the want to know more.
And so began a journey of faith - believing in the One beyond my fullest comprehension, powerful enough to spin the universe into seasons, spinning flesh together in the womb of my mother, and waiting to be discovered.
Searching leads to answers, to light-bulb moments, to community and purpose. Awakening represents the beginning of a journey that will last me a life time. Joyful, rocky, tiresome, and fulfilling. Each of us walk a different path, ultimately looking for the same answers in a world that isn't always kind.
